Sitia Cuisine. Setting itself apart from the rest is the Cretan cuisine. In Sitia, tradition is upheld in gastronomy and the Sitians’ food is one of the healthiest and most delicious kinds in theMediterranean Sea. Traditional plates include:

  • Kochlioi (snails). Try them “boumbouristous” (fried). They can also be served with rice, or boiled.
  • Rabbit with wine and pasta. The rabbit is a basic element of the Sitian cuisine.
  • “Kouloukopsomo”. Toasted bread with olive oil, tomato, feta cheese and olives. One of the Cretans’ favorite snacks.
  • Potatoes “oftes”. Potatoes baked in embers.

Local products:

  • Olive oil. With extremely low acidity (0.2-0.3), Sitian olive oil is one of the finest in the world, internationally recognized and with multiple awards.
  • Raki (tsikoudia). The locals’ favorite drink. Strong liquor with great taste. It’s extracted from grapes.
  • Wine. The area’s red wine is outstanding. The reputation of the best wine producing area belongs to Mesa Mouliana.
  • Honey

Suggestions: We tried out and recommend the taverns “Zorbas” and “Cretan House( Kritiko Spiti)”, in Sitia. In the village Mesa Mouliana, the tavern “Kefalovrisi”. In Palecastro, at the Kouremenos beach, the tavern “Anediasma”. In Kato Zakro, the tavern “Akrogiali”. In Mochlos, the seafood tavern “Bogazi”
