Archeological museum of Agios Nikolaos

The largest archeological museum of the prefecture is in Agios Nikolaos and consists of 8 halls. Exhibits included in the collection are findings from the whole of Eastern Crete, dated as far back as 8.000 years ago (Neolithic, Minoan and Roman period).

Most impressive are the findings from the great Minoan cemetery of Agia Fotia village (Holy Flame), near Sitia, where 260 tombs were found. The findings include, amongst other things, 1500 urns and grails, which represent the influence the Cycladic culture had in the area.

Other important exhibits are the golden Diadem (Mochlos), the Goddess of Mirtos (Mirtos Ierapetras), the idol of Ieria (Mirsini -Sitia), the Chrisi Peroni, the Lithino Pixidio (Gournia) and the skull with the golden wreath (Lato).

The museum is open from 08:00 to 15:00 and the ticket costs 3€.
